During the U.S. 2018-2019 flu season, 43 million got the flu, and 61 thousand died, according to CDC estimates.

The current mortality rate of the Wuhan coronavirus is less than three percent.

If the Wuhan coronavirus were able to achieve an infection of 43 million at even a 1.5 percent death rate, the results would be ten times worse than the flu at 615,000 deaths.

The flu should not be used to stifle concern, if anything it should be used to highlight the risks posed by this new threat.

We should care about the flu more than we do and encourage everyone to get flu shots every season, but the existence of the flu should not be used to downplay the threat that this emerging virus poses.
